Continue Your Individualized Education at AU
At Ashland University, we deeply appreciate the distinct educational backgrounds of homeschooled and classically educated students. Our commitment to academic excellence aligns seamlessly with the unique learning experiences you've cultivated.
At AU, we don't just welcome your distinct educational background—we celebrate it. Your self-directed learning and critical-thinking skills are not just recognized, but embraced. We see you.

Our "Accent on the Individual" philosophy means you'll receive personalized guidance that honors your independent learning style. With a low student-to-faculty ratio, we ensure that each student receives meaningful mentorship. Our diverse array of over 60 undergraduate and graduate programs provides a comprehensive academic landscape designed to match your intellectual curiosities and professional aspirations.
Recognizing the adaptability inherent in homeschool and classical education, our faculty thoughtfully structure learning environments to accommodate diverse educational approaches.
For students grounded in classical education, AU offers a unique intellectual environment that continues your rigorous academic tradition. Our humanities programs, particularly the Ashbrook Scholar Program, emphasize the great books, critical thinking and primary source analysis that are hallmarks of classical education. You'll find a scholarly community that values the trivium's approach to grammar, logic and rhetoric, allowing you to build upon the deep analytical and communication skills you've developed through your classical studies. Here at AU, we teach students how to think, not what to think.
We also understand the unique transition from homeschool to higher education and offer targeted financial support, including scholarships specifically designed for homeschooled students. Our goal is to make your educational journey both accessible and transformative. On average, about 98% of AU students receive some type of financial aid.
Beyond academics, AU offers a thriving student community with numerous Christian groups that provide spiritual growth and fellowship. Student organizations like Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and The Well create welcoming spaces for students to explore and deepen their faith and connect with like-minded peers. Students can also join the Debate Club, community service organizations, academic societies, and cultural groups to develop leadership skills, explore interests, and create meaningful connections beyond the classroom.

Frequently Asked Questions
Often referred to as “liberal education,” classical learning is a time-tested approach that aims to train students in the tools of learning, equipping them to learn for themselves rather than training in taking tests or for a specific career. By fostering wonder for the true, good and beautiful, it educates the whole person. By studying the trivium (grammar, logic and rhetoric) and often Latin, students learn to use language well, thinking, writing and speaking clearly and persuasively. And by studying the great works of Ancient Greece and Rome, the Renaissance and Reformation and the American regime, students ask the perennial questions of human life and, through conversation, practice the habits of good human beings and free citizens.
